Broken Bridge Review: A national literary journal sponsored by Pomfret School, BBR seeks unpublished work from emerging adult writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. An "emerging" writer is one who has published in journals and, perhaps, won a prize or had a first book published but is not yet one whom those in the biz would call "established." Think on the cusp. The review also welcomes college and graduate student submissions and is interested in writers with private school connections. The submission window is the month of August only. Response time is up to three months. Visit the Broken Bridge website for submission guidelines.
Broken Bridge Poetry Prize: The contest is a nationally advertised competition for students enrolled in independent secondary schools. The winner receives $500, a full scholarship to the Broken Bridge Summer Arts Workshops, and publication in the Broken Bridge Review. The submission deadline is November 15; finalists are announced in February; the winner and final judge are announced in April. Finalists also appear in the review. Visit the Broken Bridge website for submission guidelines.
Broken Bridge Summer Arts Workshops: These workshops - in poetry, fiction, acting, drawing, dance, and diginal arts - are for high school artists. This friendly and intense ten-day program is held on Pomfret School's beautiful, 500-acre campus in late June and brings together fifty-plus students from around the country for an program designed to accelerate their development as young artists. The faculty is comprised of distinguished visiting artists, Pomfret's Fine Arts faculty members, and young Pomfret alumni who are now practicing artists in their respective fields. Applications are received from late winter through the spring. Visit the Broken Bridge website for application guidelines.
Broken Bridge Writing Retreat: For poets and writers employed in private schools (through grade 12), the Writing Retreat is a chance to draw apart and, for eight full days over the last ten days of June (days one and ten are travel days), sink into one's writing. Retreatants live in a school dormitory at Pomfret School (all single rooms), eat meals on campus, and enjoy optional opportunities for socializing in the area. A retreat director keeps a finger on the group's pulse to ensure a productive and enjoyable experience for all. The cost of the retreat does not include transportation or unscheduled events. Retreatants provide their own computers. Interested writers may inquire at bcdavis@pomfretschool.org .
Broken Bridge "062" Creative Writing Seminar: This five-week workshop is open to aspiring writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction who live in northeastern Connecticut and are looking for new ways into their work, with empathetic feedback among a circle of peers. It is offered once a term, Fall, Winter, and Spring. Interested writers may inquire at bcdavis@pomfretschool.org .
